We need some resolutions

Well, not really. I actually loathe new year's resolutions because they're usually very temporary. But a new year is a great time for reflection and adjustment, for updating goals and tweaking old behaviors.

So here's where I'm headed in '09:

I started 08 with nearly $8,000 in credit card debt (shudder) which I vowed to eliminate. I didn't quite get there, but I did cut it in half. Priority #1 is to finish the job.

I also need to find new souces of income. The economy did away with two very steady freelance gigs. The good news: it was freelance so I didn't rely on the money to live; the bad is that was how I paid down so much debt.

I'm reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", and it's changed my focus in at least two areas. Saving cash for a hous purchase is less of a priority, while investing in assets that produce income, like dividend-paying stocks is high on the list. (BTW, if you haven't already, resolve to read Rich Dad.)

Those are my financial non-resolutions for '09. Share your money goals for the new year in the comments section.

Happy 2009.

I'm with you on resolutions... I tend to think of goals and the behavior I need to change/develop/sustain in order to meet those goals. Goal number one is to keep my credit card balance in a payable range. (e.g. $500 or less). The behavior modification for me means,
1. no more random shopping excursions at the sight of the most enticing 4 letter word in the English language: SALE… oooh. I just love a sale.
2. plan plan plan ahead in terms of what I plan to do each week and make sure that I am not over spending.. yeah I a lot of words that basically means make a budget and stick to it.. I just don’t like the word budget makes me feel poor.
3. invest invest invest.. I too have gain wisdom from Rich Dad Poor Dad… and realize that I won’t be satisfied until I have money working for me to the extent where I don’t have to work for it!

I got Rich Dad, Poor Dad about a month ago. It's in my "to be read" pile of books. One of the books I hope to read in 2009. I was trying to get my girlfriend to read it with me so I could have someone to discuss it with. I even got her a copy of the book. But so far we haven't read it.

So mia, what's your resolution?

After I move back to the States, I want to find a job that I can see myself at for 3-5 years. No more bouncing around. Then I just want to save, tithe and pay my student loans down.

Keith what's the good word man, yea Rich Dad was def. a great book to put things into perspective. It basically started my desire to find several sources of income and to start doing things differently. My resolutions are to simply build capital and build quality of life.
